Overview
The Koshi Tappu Wild Life Reserve is an exciting place for bird watching and
jungle safari. Located Far South East Terai belt covers an area of 175 sq. km around a low warm sub-tropical climate. The island amidst the Great River makes a perfect home to large species of exotic birds and wild animals. A perfect location for bird lovers and ornithologists, where one can find different species of birds and various wild animals.
Koshi Tappu Wild Life Reserve is a peaceful and undisturbed park and reserve that only a few groups of visitors seldom visit. Especially keen bird lovers and expert ornithologists, the area is enriched with 280 species of birds, and 20 different types of ducks. Includes 100 wild buffalo known as ‘Arna’ with other mammals like hog deer, wild boar, spotted deer, and blue bull.
The island of Koshi Tappu is covered with the rich vegetation of tall Khair patter grassland with a deciduous mixed riverine forest. The great river of Sapta Koshi assists the local economy by permitting fishing and collection of wild edible seasonal fruits. The birdlife includes migratory and domestic, during the end of autumn and winter times. Various species of birds from Siberia, and Tibet makes a home in this undisturbed sanctuary. The reserve provides an excellent feeding and resting place, as the river offers a great number of fish. Koshi Tappu Wild Life Reserve due to its remote location, very few travelers often visit this wild and isolated area.
The first option is taking a short flight to the nearest Biratnagar city airport, and an hour's drive to the reserve. Other options of 6-7 hours overland journey, a peaceful place to spend a holiday far from busy hectic city life. Besides
enjoying wildlife safari and exciting bird watching, various places to visit around this remote location. The program set by the reserve authority and lodge management include
elephant and jungle safari, bird watching, and village visit.
As well boat ride to catch river birds and wildlife, as well drive around its tranquil and undisturbed location. Around the reserve, wild elephants are often seen with leopards and tigers, as well as Gangetic freshwater dolphins. This is an introductory itinerary of 2 nights and 3 days. For interested people can extend for more days to a week, especially for bird lovers.
Best Seasons:
Nearly all months of the year, except the monsoon wet rainy seasons of July and August months. Best in spring with wildflowers in full bloom and autumn from September to November as well in early December
Trip Itinerary
Day 1 : Fly to Biratnagar city airport and drive to Koshi Tappu Wild Life Reserve 45 minutes flight with 2 hr. drive:
From your hotel/resident, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for an exciting flight of 45 minutes to Biratnagar city airport. During flight enjoy the super panorama of a Himalayan mountain range from Langtang, Ganesh Himal with Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. On arrival at Biratnagar city airport received by the hotel staff and guide for a few hour drive to your lodge/hotels close to Koshi Tappu Wild Life
Reserve. On arrival at the lodge, the guide and naturalist provide a briefing regarding jungle activities, time for breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner. After checking your nice rooms with time to explore the local Tharu village of great cultural interest or take a nature walk.
Day 2 : Full Day Jungle Safari with various exciting activities:
Early morning before breakfast enjoy a refreshing cup of tea-coffee, then join in for nature activities like wildlife safari, elephant ride into dense jungle on the lookout for exciting wild mammals around its natural habitat.
After the morning jungle program back to the hotel for breakfast, having rest and then the morning program continues for a boat ride on the Koshi River to observe water birds and Gangetic Gharial, Marsh Mugger crocodiles, as well chances glimpse of freshwater Dolphins. The day activities include driving around the reserve with chances of spotting more wild animals like leopard, sloth bear, deer, and wild elephant as well as wild buffalo the ‘Arna’.
Day 3 : Drive to Biratnagar airport and fly to Kathmandu:
Morning enjoys various nature programs on the last day at Koshi Tappu Wild Life Reserve, options to choose from bird watching, and nature walks. After breakfast depart from the lodge, for a few hours drive on the main highway to Biratnagar city airport for a scenic flight back to Kathmandu.
After checking in as per the flight time the exciting flight reaches you back in Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu airport, then transfer back to your residence or hotel after a great experience on Koshi Wild Life Reserve.
